Artist:Fabian Oefner Title: CutUp Year: 2019 Medium: Sculpture Material: Resin, Aluminium, Glass, Brass, Plastic Dimensions: ca. 26 x 20 x 15 cm
The CutUp series is currently composed of six sculptures and is a series of technical objects that are sliced, rearranged and transformed into new forms. These objects are encapsulated in resin and remain in their current state forever.
The production process of the CutUp series is a combination of high-end technology and low-end technology. It begins with a very complicated way involving a vacuum chamber and a pressure chamber to cure the resin surrounding the object at precise atmospheric pressure and temperature. In contrast, the artist uses an old-fashioned band saw to slice the object and use brute force to cut the different materials of the object. After this step, each object slice is carefully polished by hand, reassembled into their new shape, and then embedded in the resin to form the final shape of the sculpture.
The artist deliberately chose a still camera and camera for segmentation. The image taken with the camera is “artwork” and the camera itself is just a tool. For this series, the tool is converted to artwork. It is the deconstruction of image capture technology and revealing the beauty below the surface of these objects.
A delicate work requires a high level understanding of material, manufacturing process, in my practice I prefer to run tests of materials ,different materials always provide unexpected results, it help to find the best combination of technology and materials to present my work.
For the first project our group started with choosing the topic, each group member gives at least one topic ,I gave the topic authenticity ,it has always been one of the topic i interested in the most.We brain stormed every topic and picked the topic “authenticity” to push further.
“Do not lie , alway tell the truth and be genuine to people and to yourself.” It’s one of the first lesson my parents taught me. ” be authentic” sounds easy but a lot people can’t be authentic to others or even to themselves.
During the discussion we find the media has a big influence to the society and people’s behavior ,and there are so many false informations hiding in the bombarded advertisement , in the social media and even in news.
Within the bombarded advertisement, people are getting confused with to buy what they want or to buy what they need.
Within the fake news, people are getting disappointed by the politicians and losing the trust to the government.
Compare to false news, the effecting of false advertisement is even more broad, more bombarded and hard to avoid, it’s not only effect people what to buy, it also effect people’s aesthetic and apply the twisted aesthetic to them selves and others. So we set the final topic as “manipulative advertisement”.
*well designed advertisement
*pictures i took randomly in westfield, there are more than 20 commercial in each pic.
With my individual practice I find the effect between media and people is both way, the media manipulate people, but the media is controlled by people it can be manipulated too.
my first idea was inspired by a Rubik’s cube I found covered with advertisement , the way people interact with it is matching the point i wanted to express — if we consider the Rubik’x cube as the media and the form can be changed by people twisting it.
my first idea was inspired by a Rubik’s cube I found covered with advertisement , the way people interact with it is matching the point i wanted to express — if we consider the Rubik’x cube as the media and the form can be changed by people twisting it.
During the process of making I tried to make a Rubik’s cube with different martial, I broke the Rubik’s cube i bought into pieces and try to replace the cube part with plaster so the form can have more possibility to play with .
During the process of testing I spent a week to test different ways to take the mould, I find it’s difficult to take the mould with all the details of the structure, it’s gonna take longer to run the material test to be able to get a successful piece and the time is very limited so i started to try other ways to express my point. Also after tutorial with Lee I realize that i didn’t document the process or keep the fail pieces so maybe there could be a chance to make this idea work.
I also experienced with wood carve I wanted to use it for print mould, as printed material was one of the earliest media platform, It was a fun experience but I had to give up on this idea because I couldn’t get the suitable tool and I kept injuring myself from lack of practice.
When I reviewed the process of our team discussion and personal practice, we spent hours to discuss how much we’re not happy with got feed up with false information and how desperate we want to know what’s the hidden truth behind the false informations, I was also very desperately trying to figure out the best form for the project, but what is the best form? There’s alway space to make it better; and what is the truth we trying to find? are we all finding the same truth? sometime when we get through so much chaos the truth we found might can’t give us the happiness ,the truth can be so plain and fragile and it might brought more emptiness than satisfaction.
In Buddhism they believe there’s no such thing as “The Truth”, everything is “nothingness”,the happiness is more about inner peace, and being obsessive would just bring endless struggles.
In the practice i tried to layer up the false informations i found from different era and in different form, includes digital image, article, social media post, news, advertisement, to create a chaotic condition in front of the last page as “the truth” .
*The last page side A as “the truth” and side B as “behind the truth”.
* The blocked information text ,aim to find the best result of blocking the informations by layer up the informations in different angle to create a black block.
Filippo Menczer and Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia and their colleagues created tools at the Indiana University Social Media Observatory. They want to “help people realize [brain, social and technological biases] and protect themselves from external influences and avoid being exploited by them.”
they’ve also created a game called “Fakey”,It requires players to identify which news stories and sources of information are reliable — which are not.
*Exhibition in V&A
*Contemporary artist’s work about information manipulation.
Back to childhood,it was interesting going through the western media see how they talk about current issues and their perspective of politic..very different and interesting
I was quite excited about our first project, didn’t expect it will be such a “life changing “project,It’s like my previous boyfriend, drives me crazy sometimes but I enjoy it so much I’m happy to experience this but glad it wouldn’t last longer than one month.
I’ve always been wanted to talk about authenticity,i been thinking about it a lot and it would be a great opportunity to bring it up have a discussion with new people, and again I’m so happy I did,it has helped me a lot about my personal struggle with thinking and working.
As denizens of the Information Age, we are subconsciously attuned to the pulse of an online society and its undulating trends and vernacular. But do the tweets we read truly represent our collective and individual ideas and opinions?
It goes without saying that social media presents a skewed view of society, and when bombarded daily with opinions that seemingly encapsulate the zeitgeist and unified voice of our times, this view often causes us to lose sight of the fact that, outside of the constraints of algorithmically-recommended, digitally-dictated personas, we live in the era of the greatest personal freedom humanity has ever enjoyed – the freedom to question and impact the world around us.
With globalization comes the potential for greater communication and diversity, but in the wrong hands, mass media can be a weapon of mass destruction, stifling our aesthetic and creative instincts and disseminating ideas of beauty and acceptability on a global scale. These prescribed norms and attitudes are often designed to target the most disenfranchised among us, and the wildly conflicting agendas of those in control of the information we consume can leave us doubting society, the government, and even ourselves.
The hypothesized link between the MMR vaccine and autism has been sensationalized by the media over the past two decades, resulting in a rising number American citizens opting to forgo the vaccine for fear of side effects. And now, as we have seen from the staggering number of measles cases in the United States throughout 2019 so far, the disease has undertaken a resurgence of epidemic proportions in a society where it had previously been eliminated. This is a clear case of media fearmongering putting society as a whole in danger.
In contemporary politics, the interweaving of lies and truth has created a crisis of trust in the relationship between the government and the media vis-à-vis the public, for when subjective speculation and hearsay can no longer be distinguished from the truth, how can we fully believe what we see and hear? While some of these forces vie for our confidence on the public stage, others employ more insidious methods to exert their control.
For example, a global concept of physical perfection has continually subsumed alternative notions of beauty in tandem with the growth of mass media, causing some to blindly pursue a more mainstream image, which not only affects the diversification of aesthetic development, but also has a negative impact on the physical and mental health of those affected.
These are the negative effects of being manipulated by misinformation. However, everything has two sides. Can we say that the influence of misinformation is totally negative?
For example, the aforementioned seemingly negative problems have also served to draw attention to certain issues, placing important questions under the spotlight and allowing them to be discussed and even resolved in an open and impartial environment.
Exposed before public scrutiny, these issues cannot escape the attention of those who feel the need to explore and seek out the truth. This environment of misinformation has given rise to an unsilenceable minority who question the truth and are willing to stand up for the dissemination of verifiable facts and information.
In my opinion, this inevitable reaction to the dissemination of false information helps to counter its effects to a certain extent, forcing propagandized information to be as close to reality as possible.
In addition to false information itself, the human factor is one that can by no means be ignored. A study by Douglas suggests that these people have an innate narcissistic need to maintain their unique personality and distinctiveness. Having the ability to access exclusive information or understand different “secret” interpretations of specific events, makes one easier to be manipulated. In addition, a lack of education, self-confidence, and judgment also makes one easier to manipulate.
I prefer to believe that the current state of affairs is a necessary stage in the evolution of human society, and that we are gradually becoming more and more capable of forming well-reasoned judgments. As our ability to communicate, process information, and evaluate veracity evolves, perhaps the information provided to us will in fact become closer to the truth.
